The devastating news of Britishvolt appointing administrators today (Tuesday 17th January 2023) has unfortunately left around 300 employees without a job as they were made redundant with immediate effect.

After hitting the news in November 2022, Britishvolt managed to avoid collapsing and bought themselves some time by securing five weeks of funding as well as their 300 staff agreeing to a voluntary salary reduction.

This morning we saw on the news that Britishvolt were again facing financial issues and had decided on Monday 16th January that there were no viable bids for a 'majority sale' to keep the company going.

Employees were called to an 'all staff' meeting at 12:00pm on Tuesday where they were told that Britishvolt had collapsed and the most of the 300 staff were made redundant with immediate effect. It's thought that the company were waiting until after the staff meeting to make a public announcement.

Britishvolt, which had a HQ office in the Midlands, were planning to build a £3.8bn gigafactory in Blyth, Northumberland which they hoped would create around 3,000 jobs.

We're heard reports that staff had heard that the business was struggling financially, however no consultation regarding their redundancy has taken place.

Being made redundant without notice can have a devastating effect on employees and their families, and with the added pressures of the UK's current cost of living crisis, we can't imagine how some of the staff must be feeling.

We're looking to help those Britishvolt employees who have been made redundant by making a claim for a Protective Award.

If you're facing redundancy from Britishvolt, we may be able to help you.

What is a Protective Award Claim?

if an employer makes more than 20 staff redundant in one location, they legally have to consult with either a recognised trade union or elected employee representatives. If Britishvolt failed to comply with this obligation and you were made redundant without notice or consultation, you may be entitled to claim compensation by bringing a claim for a protective award to the Employment Tribunal.

Our redundancy solicitors would like to support former employees of Britishvolt with bringing a claim for a protective award, where the Tribunal is able to award up to 90 days’, pay capped at £571 per week (£4568 in total) to each individual who is part of the claim.
